Skid Steer Log Splitter

A skid steer log splitter is one of the best devices in the world of wood cutters.

Imagine if you could quickly and easily chop all of the logs on your wood pile without spending hours using an ax to perform back breaking work, wouldn’t that be worth an investment?  A skid steer log splitter can do just that and is an ideal way to quickly and easily chop wood with minimal effort on your part.  Unlike standard gas or even electrical log splitters, a skid steer model is made to attach to a piece of construction equipment like a Bobcat.  Once attached, a you can automatically chop logs by using a lever, or the Bobcat itself to control the skid steer system to automatically split even the largest logs.

These are ideal for major outdoor jobs with logging companies, or if you have a massive amount of property that needs to be tended.  Skid steer log splitters require less effort than either gas or electric models, and also perform the job about twice as quickly.  Plus skid steer models handle the logs that a smaller splitter can’t.  When attached to a Bobcat, this type of splitter can tackle even the largest logs without a problem.  They even come with attachments to automatically split a log into four even pieces.

The only real downside is price.  A skid steer log splitter attachment itself costs $600 and up.  That’s not factoring in the price of a Bobcat if you don’t currently own one, which can go as high as $15,000.  So if you’re not willing to make the investment of purchasing a Bobcat, this probably isn’t an ideal wood chopper.  If you don’t have the big jobs required of a skid steer log splitter, it’s best to stick to smaller gas or electrical log splitters.

Another downside is that you have to be properly trained in a skid steer log splitter’s operation.  Because a Bobcat requires special training, the same applies to such a large wood chopper.  Otherwise you run the risk of injuring yourself, or somebody around you.  Also you could damage your equipment, or your Bobcat, and repairing either can be very expensive.  But if you have massive jobs that require the 20-30 tons of pressure that a skid steer splitter can apply, this is an ideal option.  Just remember it’s a huge time and money investment, so weigh the pros with the cons.  Make sure you’re ready for what this really entails, before purchasing a chopper that’s too advanced for your plans.

If a skid steer log splitter seems like the right addition to the jobs you have in mind, then you’ll need to know where to buy one.  The best places are hardware stores, which are bound to have a few options available, or the means to order the equipment for you.  Home Depot is a good place to start, but their prices can be marked up depending upon the area in which you live.  To avoid this you can also order a skid steer log splitter online.  The best place to do that would be LogSplittersDirect.com.  They have a wide variety of splitters at industry prices, so you can find the tool you need on the budget you can afford.
